Rheumatic fever is a nonsuppurative, acute inflammatory complication of group A streptococcal infection, causing combinations of arthritis (inflammation of a joints), carditis (inflammation of the heart), subcutaneous nodules, erythema marginatum (a type of erythema multiforme in which the reddened areas are disk-shaped, with elevated edges), and chorea (a nerve disease with involuntary and irregular movements). Diagnosis is based on applying the Jones criteria to information from history, examination, and laboratory testing. Treatment includes aspirin or other NSAIDs, corticosteroids during severe carditis, and antimicrobials to eradicate residual streptococcal infection and prevent reinfection
