Statins are very over hyped by drug companies. Statins have 11 other effects besides lowering cholesterol . Statins have an anti- inflammatory effect. This is how they work for slightly reducing CAD. Fish oil has done just as much. Look up "Dr Dwight Lundell". He is a respected , pioneering heart surgeon who is speaking out publicly on the cholesterol myth. This video by Dr. Malcolm Kendrick should help you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jE_RIQY53ys&feature=related

Ignore "Rick". The vast majority of the medical community believe that high cholesterol levels increase the risk of hear disease. I look at medical journals, not YouTube. The effects are multiple. Existing deposits are stabilized. That means they harden and are less likely to break off & cause problem. Also, the lower levels mean that less is deposited. One other effect, not completely understood, is that statins reduce inflammation in the vascular system Start with some info from the American Heart Assn. http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3046113
