SURVEY: Is heart disease a major public health issue

SURVEY: Is heart disease a major public health issue?
I'm doing a research project for my thesis at OSU and am required to administer an internet survey as a primary souce. My topic deals with heart disease and my question is as follows: Do you think heart disease is a major public health issue, and do you think it can be prevented through education and improved lifestyle habits? Any input is valued and appreciated. Thank you.

Heart disease is only an issue for those who have an Omega 3 fatty acid versus Omega 6 imbalance in their diet; and those who consume a lot of high fructose corn syrup, margarine, and Canola Oil. Shortening isn't healthy either... neither is "skim" milk. People with a deep crease in one, or both, earlobes run a higher risk for heart disease. Hope that helps...
2 :
When you consider that the vast majority of heart disease is vascular, and the vast majority of vascular heart disease is self induced, then absolutely yes to both your questions. Most is then preventable. Eat healthier and exercise more. And maybe pass legislation preventing big food companies from killing us with unhealthy food. Just try and find a prepared rice product, like Rice a Roni, that has less than 700 mg if sodium in it. Or, why let Pepsico and other fast foods into our public school systems? Money, that's why. Otherwise known as greed. And what about all the sophisticated marketing practices employed by corporate America telling our young what to buy and eat that will fatten up their coffers along with the bodies of our young. So don't stop at education and lifestyle changes, though that's a good place to start.

This may help you on your research project. http://www.americanheart.org/downloadable/heart/1265665152970DS-3241%20HeartStrokeUpdate_2010.pdf I'm not sure how any diet regarding Omega 3 or 4 fish oil has any significance in reducing the amount of plaque built up on the arterial wall and preventing atherosclerosis. I believe that diet and other factors all contribute to a healthy lifestyle or predispose individuals to coronary artery disease. If there is some literature available that supports insufficiency in omega 3 or 4 in a persons diet predisposes a person for coronary artery disease please email it to me.

Heart attack (myocardial infarction) is a disease acquired by the lifestyle and food pattern. It is a major public health issue. In developing countries, heart valve defect occurs due to rheumatic fever. In developed countries, heart valve defect is due to calcification and atherosclerosis of the aorta. (Rheumatic fever is rare in the developed countries.) Heart failure (HF) affects about 5 million people in the US; > 500,000 new cases occur each year. Cigarette smoking, lack of exercise, fatty rich diet, uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension are the most likely cause of heart attack.
5 :
You should clarify what you mean by heart disease. There are some preventable types, but some are caused by genetics. Or like congenital heart disease which has no cause at all and is not preventable its something you are born with

If everyone in a person's family died from heart disease, does that put the person at increased risk

If everyone in a person's family died from heart disease, does that put the person at increased risk?
Will this person most likely die from heart disease, or a similar cardiovascular disease?

The odds are against that person but if the person took care of themslves with proper diet and exercise, no smoking and no drinking (alcohol) they do not have to get heart disease.
2 :
Heart disease does tend to run in certain families. If you know your family's health history includes heart disease, it would be wise to see a doctor and discuss a plan to prevent heart disease from taking your life too. Eating sensibly, getting exercise as directed by your doctor, avoiding smoking and alcohol in excess are a vital part of that plan. Your doctor can give you more specific instructions.
3 :
Heart disease is known to be a hereditary. This person is at a higher risk of suffering from the cardiovascular disease. Follow a good diet and good exercise, don't smoke and watch alcohol excess. Can and usually improves the odds...Good luck..

"Cholesterol buildup in the arteries starts in the teen years, so the younger one knows about family history, the better," says Eric Topol, M.D., chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Heart disease in a parent or sibling doubles your risk. It jumps higher if more than one relative is affected -- including grandparents, aunts and uncles -- and if it was early onset (before age 55 for men and before 65 for women). If a parent died before age 50 from heart disease, Topol says, it's "quite worrisome." What You Can Do: The American Heart Association says to have your primary care doctor assess your cardiovascular risk starting at age 20. Your doctor should review your family history and check your body mass index and/or waist-to-hip ratio (a measure of abdominal obesity, which is highly predictive of heart disease risk). Check your blood pressure at least once every two years and cholesterol levels every five years -- more often if they're high. As for strengthening your ticker, the keys are the magic four: no smoking, prudent diet, 30 minutes of exercise a day, normal weight. Harvard's look at disease risks in 84,000 nurses found that women who abided by these guidelines reduced risk of heart attack by 66% compared with women who had less heart-healthy lifestyles. "If you stay thin and exercise most days of the week," Cleveland Clinic's Topol says, "you'll stay way ahead of things, no matter what your genes are."

The short answer to your question is yes. My family has a history of heart disease. My grandfather (dads side) died of a heart attack at 69, which may not seem that unusual, but my father died at 54 of a heart attack, and I had my heart attack at 39. It is unusual that they were all 15 years earlier in each case. When I say heart attack, we all had plaque buildup in major arteries (heart disease). My doctor suggested that my son have a cholesterol check and just some standard tests done at age 20, which he will be in a few months. Diet and excercise are very important to help prevent heart disease, but if you have a family history, it may not be enough. See you doctor if this is a concern. Luckily I lived through my heart attack. Considering I had a 100% blockage in my left anterior descending artery when I arrived at the hospital. That artery is called the widow maker...get the picture. I had typical symptoms, shortness of breath, the feeling of an elephant on my chest, and pain in my right jaw. I didn't ignore the symptoms, although my tendency was to do so. I went to the hospital instead of work that day, and it is the only reason I am alive today. I hope this helps you some. If you have a history, I urge you to see a doctor and go over your history and options. The earlier the better.
6 :
yes it will increase the risk of that person to have cardiovascular disease we studied this in medical school positive family history is one of the risk factors so my advice for you is to take care of your diet, keep your lipid level (cholesterol)low ,control your blood pressure
7 :
It is very possible that could happen, however if you are aware of the situation and you let your doctors know you have a good chance that it won't kill you, but you will most likely have something that needs medication or life changes, doesn't always have to end bad

First thing is to see a doctor. You could have heart disease. Also, you should quit smoking and drinking. It won't make your heart any better.
2 :
stop smoking and drinking,go for a checkup don't think you are 24 and heart disease will not come and find you.
3 :
Chest pain should ALWAYS be checked out by a doctor. You can have heart problems at any age. Please make a doctors appt and let them do do some tests.
4 :
Please don't rely on total strangers for your health concerns. Seek the advise of a doctor or call a hospital and talk to a nurse. Try to relax and don't stress yourself out by worrying about something that may or may not be wrong until you know what is going on with your body. I think you know that smoking and drinking are harming you or you wouldn't have mentioned it (I'm a smoker too). Maybe you are getting the wake up call you need to make some lifestyle changes

My name id Dr.Jothi. I'm a consultant cardiac surgeon from coimbatore south india. I work in a private hospital at coimbatore. I have plenty of small children with heart diseases who are very poor and unable to afford the cost of surgery. I therefore request any body to help these kids by donating any money or lead me to organisations who might be willing to help these poor children.

Well it's the only way, diet and exercise. Don't eat crap and avoid foods that CAUSE cancer. Like Splenda. Look up on google the foods that cause cancer and heart disease. Then look up the foods that PREVENT both

I'm not gonna give out numbers, but what I will say is that smoking does not cause heart disease. There are a variety of things that cause it. I would say that more nonsmokers get heart disease. It can happen to anybody.
2 :
First of all, vlr723 is WRONG, Smoking can cause heart disease, b/c by compromising your lungs you decrease the amount of oxygen to your heart, therefore increasing its stress & pumping abilities which leads to "TADA!", Heart Disease. You can check with the American Heart Association for statistics. RN
3 :
Living with an active smoker increases one's risk of heart disease by 30%. Those who are regular, long-time smokers have a 70% greater risk of death from coronary heart disease than non-smokers

This is a lame homework assignment that is wrong headed. Choleserol doesn't increase in a vaccum. Tell the patient to go on a vegan diet regime and work into an aerobic exercise program. With rare exceptions, heart disease is preventable and reversible through a radically healthy lifestyle change. Don't push pills, push a healthy lifestyle.
2 :
This is a theoretical question. In real life the risk of heart disease has decreased. Good luck with your calculations
