Can You Do Martial Arts If You Suffer from a Chronic Illness ie. Heart Disease

Can You Do Martial Arts If You Suffer from a Chronic Illness ie. Heart Disease?
I was wondering on if it is safe / recommended to practice martial arts if you have a life threatening illness like heart disease or palpitations?
Martial Arts - 5 Answers

1 :
You could, but it would depend on the Martial art you were looking into. Also, I would ask my doctor first, it all depends on the person and the unique situation.
2 :
I would first recommend Qigong training. It will help your condition. Afterwards you can do some good Tai Chi Chuan/Taijiquan, then Hsing Yi Chuan/Xingyiquan and then Pakua Chang/Baguazhang. These are all Internal Arts and I included alternate spellings. Research them thoroughly.
3 :
u could ask the doctor first if i was u
4 :
U should always check with ur dr before starting any form of exercise if u have a health condition. I would suggest u take up an Internal MA such as Taijiquan or Baguazhang.
5 :
I would first follow suit with the Dr. permission, but I would also step out of that societal mold for a moment to offer my own personal experience. I have suffered from injuries which 'western medical science' could not properly assess, or fix (not the same thing or in the same instance). Through diligent practice in Tai Chi, Qigong, and Neigong I have rid myself of most of the pain and other issues with those injuries. I still have a long way to go, but it's progress that otherwise would not have happened. I used to have to sleep with a mouthpiece, a pillow under one shoulder, and at least four IB tablets every night or with Skelaxin, or another painkiller. I don't have to work so hard anymore thanks to my diligent practices with Kung/Gong and Taiji

Has the stereotype of heart attack being a man's disease vanished

Has the stereotype of heart attack being a man's disease vanished?
I heard on the radio the #1 killer of women is heart disease. That's interesting because I think most people would figure it's breast cancer. Anyway I think that is significant because it shows both women and men can have heart troubles (the physical kind/not the emotional kind).
Heart Diseases - 2 Answers

I think it's in the process of vanishing. The problem is partly that females tend to experience heart attacks differently than men. Theirs is often less painful and a woman might dismiss it as a heartburn rather than anything serious.
2 :
As a heart patient, I do research on the subject. 60% of heart patients are women

will they keep me in hospital if i have heart disease

will they keep me in hospital if i have heart disease?
i'm going to emergency room tomorrow to see if i have heart disease. if i do have it, will i need to stay in hospital? or they will let me out the same day? if i have to stay in hospital, how many days will i be staying? i suspect that i have a very mild heart disease, like in the early stage..... so how many days will i need to stay in hospital for treatment? money is no problem to me since i got it all covered by my insurance. the thing is... i don't want to stay in hospital for too long. i mean, i have a busy life, the most i can stay is 3-4 days..... are 4 days enough to "cure" (temporarily) a heart disease

heart disease is a serious thing if u do have it u will probably be in there for quite some time
2 :
ahhmm, not exactly that you will go to an emergency room, because that room is for emergency stuff only..I think you need to go to a diagnostic and lab test hospital...If you do have a heart disease, it's up to you if you'll gonna stay or not in the hospital, because youre the one who pays for your hospital stay...I think what the doctor will just say something to lessen the complications and to prevent attacks..
3 :
I am not a Doc mate and even if somebody here was one you have not explained it enough Who sent you there and were you not listening to what they said. I know from experience that often the words Tests & Hospitals make you brain dead at the time. If it was serious you would be in hospital right now. Ring the hospital or your Doctor to find out if you need an overnight bag. If they haven't told you to pack one my guess is they do not intend to keep you in overnight Good Luck Any Way
4 :
If I were you I would wait until you are examined and a doctor tells you the extent of treatment needed if any because there is nobody who can honestly or accurately answer you questions on the web

What's The Link between diabetes and Heart Disease

What's The Link between diabetes and Heart Disease?
I know that Triglycerides strengthen the link between diabetes and heart disease but how does that go?
Diabetes - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Ben ! The vagus nerve regulates the heart rate, and when it gets injured due to high blood glucose levels the heart rate is fast even at rest. The fast heart rate by itself is not necĂ‚essarily harmful, unless the person also has coronary artery disease. In this case, the neuropathy can increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems and even death. Therefore, people with diabetes who have autonomic neuropathy affecting the heart should be evaluated by a cardiologist to determine the extent of heart disease. For more visit http://www.diabetesindetail.com
2 :
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=diabetes+and+Heart+Disease&fr=ush-ans
3 :
Several of our organs do not run primarily or sugar, but on fat. The heart is one of them. And the diabetic heart takes up more fat and burns more fat than it needs. So the hearts of people with diabetes tend to have more fat in them, which can cause the heart to not squeeze so well. That's what is called cardiomyopathy. The same problem may happen in the small blood vessels. That's the link triglycerides strengthens between diabetes and heart disease. Insulin resistance in cells that line blood vessels makes the vessels susceptible to damage from fatty acids. Then, high blood sugars and high fatty acids can cause the heart to put down extra scar tissue, making it so the heart cant expand and contract as it should. Therefore, fatty acids and triglycerides are contributing to the onset of diabetes by damaging the insulin-producing beta cells

How is cardiovascular heart disease formed

How is cardiovascular heart disease formed?
I want strictly details on the heart the disease. Nothing extra!!
Heart Diseases - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Heart disease is any disorder that affects the heart's ability to function normally. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart itself. This happens slowly over time. Some heart diseases can be present at birth (congenital heart diseases). Other causes include the following: * Hypertension * Abnormal function of the heart valves * Abnormal electrical rhythm of the heart * Weakening of the heart's pumping function caused by infection or toxins. Well known causes of cardiovascular disease include diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia.
2 :
Clearly, this is a complex topic, and books have been written about it. Here is some background. The arteries that supply the heart are the coronary arteries. Typically, people have three main arteries. These arteries are prone to disease the same as any other artery in the body. The result of disease is narrowing of the artery and hence limiting of the blood that they can carry. This limits the oxygen that can be supplied to the muscle of the heart. When the artery is narrowed by approximately 75%, the artery may not be able to carry sufficient oxygen to supply the heart, particularly at times of increased demand such as exercise. The result is angina pectoris (chest pain), amongst other things. When this is critical, the heart muscle dies; a heart attack. There are a number of factors known to cause coronary artery disease. These include family history, being male, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and possibly one or two other things. Over time, there is thickening of the layers of the coronary artery wall. The combination of high pressures, inflammation etc make this thickening unstable. In fact this can rupture, and this is what causes a sudden obstruction to blood flow causing a heart attack.
3 :
Bad diet, smoking, drugs (like crack or cocaine),cholesterol, heredity , high blood pressure, and diabetes can all be contributing factors to forming heart disease. Need to eat healthy and exercise. Exercise increases good cholesterol to help rid your self of plaque formation. Stress is another thing that can be bad for your heart. Smoking constricts blood flow to the heart. You can also take an aspirin a day to help thin the blood to reduce the workload of your heart. If problems with aspirin talk with your doctor. Get regular check ups. Follow your doctors recommendations. Read. The more information you have the better you are able to deal with health issues. Stay away from foods high in fat and salt. Plaque forms on the arteries throughout your body. As your veins and arteries harden and narrow you become at risk for heart attack, heart disease, heart failure and other related heart problems. Anything that elevates your blood pressure is also bad.
4 :
It seems that inflammation is one of the main causes of heart disease, which can come from the presence of bacteria in the body, and inturn it affects the heart. So, one good rule of thumb is to learn to keep inflammation down in the body, and to prevent it if all possible. Vitamin C is very necessary for the body to help ward off heart disease and to help keep the cardiovascular system strong. See the links below for more information, especially the one for Dr. Hulda R. Clark, Ph.D.,N.D. and her flagship book called, "The Cure For All Diseases." In her book, Dr. Clark says that there are only two (2) causes of diseases, Toxins and Parasites

Is there any way to reduce the risk of Heart Disease

Is there any way to reduce the risk of Heart Disease?
After Billy Mays' recent heart disease-related death, I started thinking about my OWN heart, and how I might be susceptible to heart problems later on. My dad and his dad have had multiple heart attacks each, so I've got a hereditary issue there. But is there any way to reduce the risk of heart disease? Or should I plan on dying by the time I'm 50?
Heart Diseases - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Of course there's a way. You can make yourself less susceptible to heart disease by regularly exercising and consuming less saturated fats/eating healthier.
2 :
As they say, eat healthy and exercise plenty and your heart should be fine. Unfortunately you cant get rid of the hereditary issue but you can control it and with regular cardiovascular check ups you should be set for life.
3 :
I use this blackhat forum w w w.blackhatguide.n e t
4 :
i've heard that eating healthy and exercising helps.
5 :
Prevent heart disease by diet and exercise.
6 :
There are many things you can do to reduce your risks, but statistically 50% of us are going to die of our heart disease eventually. Never, ever ever smoke! If you do stop now. Eat a healthy diet low in animal fats high on fruit, vegetables and whole grain cereals and oily fish. Take regular vigorous exercise, the minimum is 30 minutes 5 times a week. If you have a poor family history consider getting your Blood Pressure and cholesterol checked. If you cholesterol is significantly raised or indeed if you have a familial hypercholesterolaemia, ensure it is managed adequately.
7 :
My family has a terrible history of heart disease - dad died at 56 (otherwise the healthiest man on the planet), his mom at 46, my uncle has had triple bypass twice, and my aunt has had 3 heart attacks. Trust me, I am way concerned about this too. If you have a family history, speak to your doctor. Get a complete cholesterol work up and it's not a terrible idea to go ahead and get a blood pressure machine (a nice one costs about $40 or $50) and keep tabs on that too. Don't smoke, eat healthy, and exercise. Cardio workouts are the best as they help with something having to do with how your blood travels through your arteries (I'm not a technical person with medical stuff). I think one of the best diets to follow is the standard Harvard Food Pyramid - http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/pyramid/ It's an easy diet to maintain and all around very healthy. It's smart for you to take heart disease seriously. One more thing, and this is really the most important - see your doctor regularly. My father would still be alive today if he wasn't such a dipwad. He refused to see a doctor

I have the total population for each state and then the number of deaths per 100,000 for each state should I divide the population by 100,000 then multiply that answer by the deaths per 100,000 to get an answer i.e if the population of Texas is 22,968,248 should i divide that by 100,000 and then multiply that answer by 237.8 (number of deaths per hundred thousand due to heart disease)?

do facial lines in men indicate heart disease

do facial lines in men indicate heart disease?
Can you tell anything about heart disease by facial lines in men?
Heart Diseases - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
NO! Lines are merely graceful aging... nothing more... if you start to worry about that you'll become a basket-case... so! Get a album of Alice Copper - Killer... he tells why lines form on our faces... have a good day and don't worry about those lines!
2 :
As the face matures, it changes some of its most enduring properties and acquires new attributes (e.g., wrinkles). These changes are the basis for information about the aging of the face. The greatest changes occur from infancy to puberty as the face and head mature into an adult form. The eyes, nose, and mouth features of the face expand to fill a relatively greater area of the surface of the cranium; the relative area occupied by the forehead shrinks as the eyes move up into this area; the eyes become proportionately smaller and the forehead slopes back more; the face becomes smaller in respect to the rest of the body; and the chin tends to become larger and more protrusive. Some of these changes may continue, but less dramatically, into adulthood, but other changes begin to occur to mark aging of the face and correspond to the decline of the face past the generative years into old age. The skin becomes darker, less flexible, rougher, and more leathery; lines, wrinkles, folds, pouches, and blemishes or discolorations gradually appear and/or become more pronounced; muscles and connective tissues change their elasticity; and fatty deposits and bone may be lost to produce pouches in the cheeks, bags under the eyes, sagging under the chin or a double chin, opening of pores, and other changes in the way soft tissues conform to the underlying bony structure. They indicate heart disease? Changes in the vascular supply of the skin and in hair, oil and sweat glands usually occur. There are also changes in the movements and behaviors of the face as it ages, but little is known about these changes because they require a long research period to study. During aging of the face, fine control of the facial muscles is lost, similar to finger dexterity. Take care as always

If data show obesity and heart disease in the US is real, Does this mean Global Warming is real as well

If data show obesity and heart disease in the US is real, Does this mean Global Warming is real as well?
If I run scientific studies to show that people in the USA are obese and have heart disease, does this prove global warming is real? Is the basic inability to understand scientific fact the reason why half the people believe anything others tell them? What is the logic that drives thinking like this?
Global Warming - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Yes! but only if you yell real loud and insult people while doing it!
2 :
If you make predictions about increasing obesity and heart disease (or lowered lifespan) and you're wrong... well then your prediction sucks, and you shouldn't be relied on. Same if you predict "snow will be rare" and you get more snow than you've ever had.. then your predictions shouldn't be relied on. It's pretty elementary, even AGW believers should be able to get this.
3 :
Global warming is real. It's when gases like co2(carbon dioxide) trap the sun's heat around the earth.
4 :
"Is the basic inability to understand scientific fact the reason why half the people believe anything others tell them?" You forgot - and the reason why half the people don't believe anything others tell them. I don't see any logic in your statements.
5 :
1. I think you know the answer to that one. (Ă‚¡No!) 2. Yes 3. The logic that drives the thinking that fat people exist = AGW is real. I didn't know there was anyone who thought like that

Can chipped mugs cause heart disease

Can chipped mugs cause heart disease?
I work in cafe and a woman refused to take a cup of coffee the other day due to a small chip in the rim (the last mug in the whole shop on a bank holiday!!). She seemed very concerned we had a chipped mug and insisted we told our boss that chipped mugs cause heart disease. I really can't see any reason for it to cause heart disease specifically! Anyone out there capable of enlightening me?
Heart Diseases - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Chipped mugs probably harbour germs but they wouldn't cause heart disease.
2 :
I dont think so thats silly! Just becase a but of mug isnt there doesnt mean u'll get heart desease!
3 :
I don't know about it causing heart disease, but germs and bacteria can get into the chip. In a restaurant, that can add up really fast. Where the finish is chipped on any plate or cup is germ town. I'd have asked for a new mug too.
4 :
I understand not accepting a chipped mug for sanitary reasons, but heart disease, really? It's very unlikely, but may be possible, to pick-up a virus or bacteria that could be associated with heart disease. That could happen whether the mug is chipped or not, or even without a mug. The lady seems a little neurotic to me, but to each their own. Besides, the customer has the right to expect clean, chip and crack free dinnerware and utensils without an explaination. Terry
5 :
No. There is no plausible reason why using a chipped mug should cause heart disease. Heart disease (coronary artery disease) is caused by a combination of genetics, poor diet, lack of exercise, diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking. Mugs are generally made of glazed ceramics (baked clay). The glaze prevents any impurities or toxins from leaching out of the clay. While there is a theoretical risk that this may happen with a chipped mug, it is unlikely since the chip is probably not continuously exposed to the drink. As long as the mug is cleaned after each use, it is also unlikely to transmit infection.
6 :
heart disease -no. bacteria -yes. toss the chipped mug out

What are the chances of cancer/heart disease when.......?

1 :
I would say you probably already have it and just don't know it. Unless you're extremely lucky, or you turn your life around this second, I don't think you'll be able to avoid either of those diseases.
2 :
Probably 98%. Replace your bad habits with good habits. When you're stressed go for a walk. Instead of rewarding yourself with food, buy yourself new smaller clothes. Don't go cold turkey, because you will just set yourself for failure. Do it little by little. It took you along time to get there, it'll take along time to get out. Good Luck Prayer also helps a lot.
3 :
You or whoever this is about has a very high chance. My brother worked at a Hospital for Cancer as an intern and he told me all about it. Since you smoked cigarettes since you were a kid, you are at high risk of getting lung cancer. More people get lung cancer than any other kind of cancer combined. It's a little late to stop smoking, but work on your diet. I know it is hard to lose weight now that you are on bad eating habits, but heart disease is at high risk as well, so lose lots of weight, not by starving or throwing up, but by the right way, which is to eat healthy and excericise. It's 50% nutrition and 50% excericise.
4 :
You might have a 25% chance of developing either, just remember those are some factors that make your chances higher, but there are still others, like sex, race and age, and hereditary predisposition as well. Children of parents with heart disease are more likely to develop it themselves. African Americans have more severe high blood pressure than Caucasians and a higher risk of heart disease. Heart disease risk is also higher among Mexican Americans, American Indians, native Hawaiians and some Asian Americans. This is partly due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes. Most people with a strong family history of heart disease have one or more other risk factors. BUT it's never too late to start changing at least some of those risk factors, like taking charge of your diet and stopping smoking. Also, walking can undo some of the prior damage done to the circulatory system. When you walk, new cappilary vessels start forming and your heart gets stronger. Yes, just by walking.
5 :
99.9 %
6 :
The near future for sure... So turn your self around and live like you want to live till your 80+ Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania

WHAT IS A FOOD PATTERN? I THINK EXERCCISE AND CALCIUM HELP AVOID.DELAY OSTEOPOROSIS.. DIABETES ? A PANCREAS DISORDER .. THOUGHT THAT WAS "CURED" 2000'S....? INSULIN SUGAR GLUCLOSE
2 :
Diabetes - insulin is the only substance that decreases out blood sugar and is secreted by cells in our pancrease. if you eat too much sugar and are genetically predisposed to it, the amount of insulin your body can produce will decrease leading to high sugar levels after you eat. sugar is bad for small vessels causing blindness, leg pain, etc. (basically, our pancreas cells have only so much insulin they can spit out during our life time. keep in mind that having fat will make you more insulin resistant as well so losing weight helps diabetes) Heart disease - your diet contributes about 15% to your cholesterol, the rest is genetic. Having high cholesterol predisposes you to building artherosclerotic plaques (blockages) in your arteries causing what is known as coronary artery disease (heart disease) Osteoporosis - you put on bone mass until you're about 30 and then you start loosing it progresively. why this is important is because you have to eat enough calcium before you're 30 years old so that you start off with a more bone mass when it starts to deteriorate. As far as cancer goes, there have been some links: smoked/BBQ food to stomach cancer, alcohol to breast, esophageal, stomach, oral cancer (among others). there are others

It's not a disease but i have cardiomegaly. Cardiomegaly is abnormal enlargement of the heart. It was caused because I have a really weak heart muscle. I have a really hard time breathing sometimes. Good luck with your heart! Keep a positive attitude! I hope you'll get better!
3 :
I got blocked tubes, but it didn't catch up to me until I was like 46 or so. Bummer, still. Careful what you eat. It could fuck you up someday.
4 :
i have a very high colesteral and i'm only 15, but it's mostly b/c it's hereditary. it still scares me tho, b/c they said mines 200 and it's only suppose to be 100 =( so now i cant anything w/ flavor basically. life just isnt fair...
5 :
Oh, you're not alone. But in this case misery does NOT love company. I had my first heart attack at the age of seven. My nephew died at age 19. His heart was tremendously enlarged. I am now 60 and so far have survived heart attacks, congestive heart failure, angina, etc. Whatever you do never smoke or drink excessively, and do exercize according to your doctor's advice. Exercize, aerobic work outs, and so forth do more for the heart than anythng. A short brisk walk also is very helpful. You will live longer and have a much more fullfilling life if you use good common sense and follow your doctors' instructions. Good luck.
6 :
My son was born with a bad heart and at age 11 had a heart transplant. Your not a lone out there, hang in there you can live a long life

is there any bright future for children with heart disease

is there any bright future for children with heart disease?
people say children born with heart disease have no future, is this statement true and why?

I don't know if it was ever true, but with the advancements in medical science, maybe stem-cell research,it certainly isn't true today
2 :
it won't be easy, but any child can live a long and fulfilling life!
3 :
LIve life as healthy as possible. Eat right, exercise and keep the body free from toxins. We have a genetic makeup when we are born, we cannot change this but we can learn prevention.
4 :
You are in advance technology world and what you said is not true.
5 :
About the only restriction is that person will never be able to purchase a private health insurance plan in the US with how our health care is setup now. Otherwise most heart diseases aren't that troublesome that it will kill someones bright future. And there are predictions that scientists may be able to grow new hearts within the next 50 years. They can already grow parts of the tissue necessary in the lab. They can already do it for mice.

Which shift pattern has higher risk of heart disease

Which shift pattern has higher risk of heart disease?
I'm 21 years old and hand have been working split shifts for the last 3 years, 2 weeks 6am-2pm then 2 weeks 2-10pm. I have heard recently that working split shifts for 15 years or more can increase the risk of developing heart disease in later life by around 300%. Is there be a risk from working my pattern or is it mainly those who work both nights and days?
Heart Diseases - 1 Answers

Its a pretty obtuse question. It depends on your blood pressure, heart rate, general diet and well being. Some people work night and day shifts and cycle and nothing happens. It depends on the person and their general state! Like anything, too much of something bad isnt good is it

Harmones seem to play a part in heart disease. Estrogen seems to be good and testerone negative. My question

Harmones seem to play a part in heart disease. Estrogen seems to be good and testerone negative. My question?
has anyone done a study to determine how hormone therapy has affected transgender people? I would like to know if estrogen shots could benefit people with heart disease?
Diet & Fitness - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Interesting question... We do know that estrogen has cardioprotective effects (testosterone does not specifically have negative effects on the heart, it just lacks the protective effects.) Among young otherwise healthy women who've had radical hysterectomies ("surgical menopause") the hormone replacement therapy (HRT) still provides the cardioprotective effects. After natural menopause, long term estrogen-only HRT is linked with gynecologic cancers. (Note: Including progesterone in HRT for post-menopausal women helps prevent the increased cancer risk.) As I'm sure you're aware, the transgendered population is unfortunately under-represented in scientific studies. But we can extrapolate the data above to very reasonably infer that trasgendered individuals who receive HRT also would benefit from the cardiovascular "protection" of estrogen. All of that said, while estrogen has cardioprotective effects it is generally not considered any kind of "treatment" for cardiovascular disease. (Not sure if that was what you were asking?) We don't take hormone treatment lightly, because the interplay/feedback mechanisms among hormones are in delicate balance. So any time you include hormone therapy in a protocol, you have to be aware of (and manage) the trickle-down effects you'll have on the multitude of systems throughout the body

Which is worse with respect to heart disease, high cholesterol or hypertension

Which is worse with respect to heart disease, high cholesterol or hypertension?
I have read that the medical community has attributed too much blame to high cholesterol as a precursor to heart disease.
Heart Diseases - 11 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
ask a doctor to know the best and the most correct answer.
2 :
you have heard right. Hypertension does much more damage.
3 :
Hypertension. Although, a combination of the two would be worse.
4 :
Neither factor is definitively "worse". you can compare the relative risks using a 10 year CVD risk score. These graphs will help you. You can calculate your own risk here: http://hp2010.nhlbihin.net/atpiii/calculator.asp and play with the variables to your hearts content.
5 :
i have both and my dr is always more concerned with the hypertension first, cholesterol second!! they do go hand in hand in contributing to heart disease.
6 :
Hypertension, does not just affect your heart. It is a factor in many diseases. Untreated hypertension will absolutely affect your heath. I don't think the medical community is stressing one over the other. Both very important risk factors to heart disease and vascular disease in general.
7 :
They cause different kinds of heart disease, and high cholesterol can lead into HTN. Cholesterol is a waxy fat that for some reason in some people builds up in critical blood vessels such as the coronary arteries. This can cause clots, which in the case of a coronary artery produces a heart attack. HTN means that your heart must work extra hard to pump blood throughout the body. Over time this can cause the heart to become enlarged or misshapen (cardiomegaly and congestive heart failure). In addtion HTN is really, really bad for diabetics. It can cause blindness, kidney failure, and strokes. The mistake the medical community made with cholesterol was first in assuming that high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) were the same. Another error was in assuming that people were simply eating too much cholesterol. It's now recognized that there is a big genetic component to developing high cholesterol.
8 :
both are associated with higher risk of heart attack, and with a higher incidence of eachother as well. in other words, someone with high blood pressure is more likely to have high cholesterol, and vice versa... and is also more likely to suffer a heart attack. it's not a matter of which one is "worse" for you. it's most important to acknowledge that elevated levels of either one (and both together) are associated with risk of many conditions, diseases and side effects that extend even beyond a simple heart attack, and it's important to have a goal of keeping both levels under control. higher levels of cholesterol are positively assoicated with atherosclerosis, which is a deposit of fatty substance on the inner walls of your arteries. atherosclerosis, when left untreated, causes the pathways of your arteries to have less room, therefore causing your blood to work harder to push through, and invariably causing higher blood pressure as a result. when the vessels eventually close off due to complete blockage, that part of your heart receives insufficient oxygen and begins to die, which is commonly known as a heart attack. a diet high in saturated fats and a lifestyle that allows tummy weight to accumulate and leaves little room for exercise will cause you to be at a higher risk for all these things. heart disease is not as cut and dried as choosing one risk factor to work on. it's affected by many health and lifestyle choices that, in sum, either work to your benefit or your detriment depending on whether you're choosing to do healthy or unhealthy things to yourself. i have included some resources for your information from the American Heart Assoc's website. hopefully they will be valuable in your search for more answers!
9 :
the trend is to make the public aware that their lifestyle choices can and will effect their future heart health.....
10 :
Hypertension THIS CAUSES DAMAGE which leads to atherosclerosis HARD FIBROUS SCAR TISSUE which leads to Coronary Heart Disease THE LIPID HYPOTHESIS IS INVALID
11 :
They both are contributors but heart disease works this way....... Your blood pressure is measuring the force at which you blood is pushed through your arteries. When you have chronic hypertension, the forces causes gouges or nicks in you arterial walls. When this happens, your body must repair the damage. It does so by using cholesterol to "paste" up the damage. It normally will use your HDL or "good" cholesterol, which is what you want b/c it creates a smooth and nice repair. When there isnt enough HDL available, your body must use your supply of LDL or "bad" cholesterol. This is very lousy, unstable "paste" and makes a bad repair job. These bad repair jobs are what cardiologists refer to as "hardening" of the arteries" b/c LDL is not flexible. If at some point these bad repair jobs rupture, then your body will use platelets to clot the area and that is a heart attack.......The true answer is that they are both precursors for heart disease as well as a few others. But the key and starter of this chain of events is HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. It is the most to blame. Keep your blood pressure below 120/80 and you will be fine

Average survival rate of ischemic heart disease

Average survival rate of ischemic heart disease?
I know that ischemic heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Canada -- and likely in the US and Europe as well -- but I do not know the chance of survival once diagnosed. Does anyone have a documented statistic?
Heart Diseases - 1 Answers

1 :
Well, your age, weight, and activity level all add up to this, but overall in Canada, the average survival rating is about 65% according to the medical world, but these results are from the early 2000's. Again this number has a lot of influence from your current health

Is this okay to ask my physician to refer me to a cardiologist, if he told me I dont have heart disease

Is this okay to ask my physician to refer me to a cardiologist, if he told me I dont have heart disease?
I did EKG and the result is normal, but I still think I have heart disease, is that OKAY to ask my physician to refer me to a cardiologist?
Heart Diseases - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
You may not need a referral to see a cardiologist but you need to check with your insurance. i know that with medicare you don't need one. If you feel that there is a possibility of heart disease and it runs in your family and you want to see one ask your doctor to give you a referral for one and I'm sure he will.
2 :
you have every right to a second opinion, and alot of doctors actually encourage it if you ask.... so it's your body and your right. only you know your body and if it gives you peace of mind do what you must! hope this helps
3 :
You can ask, but you might want to check your coverage, as lilginny suggests. I'd also talk to your physician first. Tell him why you think you have heart disease, and review the tests and procedures that he used to rule out heart disease. Unless you have a background in medicine, or you're showing signs and symptoms that you're not telling the doctor about, I'd be inclined to trust his opinion. Self-diagnosis, or even diagnosis of family members is a dangerous thing. I know of a doctor who lost a son to cancer because he diagnosed a rampaging multi-organ malignancy in his own son as "probably just an ulcer".
4 :
i have been having the same problem ,they chopped it up to palpitation due to too much coffee and cigarettes, caffeine and such causes the heart to react funny especially if there is not enough clear water intake i had a stress test last week and i passed it okay they said my heart rate rose a lil quicker then expected on the treadmill but nothing to serious ,,,anyways yes its okay to have a second opinion if your doctor refuses then he is not a good doctor and you should find a new one that's what its all about ,is you ,not their ego good luck i hope you get this figured out ..
5 :
it is ok to want to see a cardiologist, but without a verifiable reason (proven through medical records) your insurance company may not cover your visit

Can I get a serious case of heart disease if my boyfriend breaks up with me

Can I get a serious case of heart disease if my boyfriend breaks up with me?
Im a fraid ill die if he breaks up with me! does that mean i'll get heart disease? cause like, my gramma died later of heart disease when my grampa died. I think it was because her heart was so sad and depressed that it got a disease. will it happen to me?

No......... ?
2 :
No. I don't think a broken heart has ever been listed as a cause of death. When people get old their heart gets weaker. It sounds like you're super young and being ridiculous.
3 :
i seriously doubt it.
4 :
and you are a 5yr old right please say yes for that stupid ???? or are u drunk
5 :
Oh W.T.F.? This has got to be a joke! If so...funny. It not...grow up!
6 :
your heart controls the amount of blood flowing through your body. it does NOT control anything else. so no, you're not going to die of heart disease. is this even a real question?
7 :
killer pink hamster u must be like 13 so of course u feel that way u will get over it it happens to all of us.
8 :
please see a counselor
9 :
Uh, I don't think so?
10 :
No sweetie BUT emotions do have physical reactions.
11 :
Sweetheart you will not die if your bf breaks up with you. Your grandmother had probably been with your grandfather for 40 or 50 yrs. You can not compare the two. If you do end your relationship you will survive, trust me.
12 :
Your grandmother died of heart disease because it probably ran in the family. There is no way, you can get heart disease if your boyfriend breaks up with you. I would not be here today, after all of the failed relationships I have had before I met and married my husband of 16 years!!!
13 :
This heart disease you are talking about is just a mental thing. You will not die, become insane or anything else. Just depressed. If you were told that your grandmother died from sadness thats propably not correct. It was something like a heart infection.
14 :
ha thanks for that
15 :
you're kidding right. I can't believe you are actually THAT STUPID OH MY GOD HOW ON EARTH ARE YOU SO DUMB? HEART DISEASE? THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR STUPID FAKE BOYFRIEND UGGHHHH GO AWAY AND STOPP BEING STUPID. >[
16 :
No a broken heart does not cause heart disease. No one can be your whole life so start building friendships outside of your relationship.. . It's not uncommon for long time married couples to die one right after another. She could have been having heart trouble for a long time before she died.
17 :
Please dont be a pyscho and tell this to your boyfriend, it will only fuel him further to break up with you. People dont die of broken hearts, outside of fairytales. So save the dramatics for acting school and get a grip on reality dear okay? You love, and you love hard, and something tells me you love quickly aswell. Step back and evaluate the whole situation, work on yourself and your insecurities about being alone. You dont need a boyfriend to survive, and you wont attract too many good ones portraying your self as needy and non existant without one.
18 :
If everyone died from a broken heart, there would be no one left on earth. Think about it.
19 :
No, you only get heart disease by eating the wrong foods and not exercising
