Its not contagious, but if you have a family history of coronary conditions, then I'd make sure to go to the doctor to get advice, and until then, eat healthy and excersize

My mom's side of family is notorious for heart/overweight/cholesterol problems and I don't want to be like them whem I'm older. I already don't eat much red meat just because I don't care much for it, and I stay away from fried foods most of the time since they easily upset my stomach. What other foods should I avoid, or incorporate, into my diet on a regular basis that will protect my heart and arteries?

I would suggest whole wheat bread by sara lee to be specific. Some Cheerios ( not honey nut or anything like that, just plain ) Some Kraft Live-Active Cheese, Raisins ( Natural ) Granola Bars. Salad, Fruits, and some unsalted peanuts. Chicken ( not processed ) is always good for protein, Pasta is easy to digest and lightweight. Read up on the benefits of garlic. You can take them in pills. vitamin C has an array of benefits. Vegetables and fruits are the way to go. Fried foods are great but they must be eaten sparingly. Walking will keep your diet in check - burning off calories sensibly. Look into garlic though, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The difference between the 4th and 5th edition will likely be a matter of page numbering and a few illustrations. The book was just completely updated for the 4th edition. Save yourself some coin and buy the 4th one if you want the book so badly. I'm assuming you're not at Harvard. That all said, it's a very decent textbook, and it's easy to read

Hell NO! You are a fool. Look up Reyes Syndrome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reyes_syndrome People with no common sense / over protective like you shouldn't have children as you end up doing them more harm.

Nope! The body is an evolving thing. Introduce too many things, and the body gets used to them. And them becomes dependant on them. The body is awesome. Let it do its' worlk. Ann added note: My little (at the time, tiny) brother was in the back seat of my car, as I was trying to help him, vomiting and dying, while my mom rushed to the Hospital. So NO ASPIRIN.

No, adults are only supposed to take one small dose aspirin daily and that is not even for every adult, its more older people or people with heart issues already diagnosed. Children under the age of 18 are NOT supposed to take aspirin ever ever ever, it can be deadly. Not for any reason- heart worries, illness, headache, etc. They have to take tylenol or advil. Besides the Reyes syndrome which is the possibly deadly thing, it also increases your risk of internal bleeding and stomach ulcers, etc. Aspirin doesn't quite work like that anyway. I don't think young people like in their 20s/30s ever really should take it either on a daily basis, unless they have some particular medical condition and their doc recommends it specifically. If you want kids/teens to grow up and not have heart problems they should eat well, get daily exercise and not smoke. That is way more effective for your overall health as an adult, and will keep you from getting heart problems that require you to take aspirin or other meds when you're in your fifties or sixties.

Cedars-Heart Center claims 30% reduction of the plaque in 5 weeks. ApoA-I Milano is a naturally occurring mutant of ApoA-I, found in a family descended from a single couple of the 18th century. First described in 1980, it was the first known molecular abnormality of apolipoproteins. Paradoxically, carriers of this mutation have very low HDL cholesterol levels, but no increase in the risk of heart disease. Biochemically, ApoA-I contains an extra cysteine bridge, causing it to exist as a homodimer or as a heterodimer with ApoA-II. However, the enhanced cardioprotective activity of this mutant (which likely depends on cholesterol efflux) cannot easily be replicated by other cysteine mutants. Recombinant Apo-I Milano dimers formulated into liposomes can reduce atheromas in animal models by up to 30%. ApoA-I Milano has also been shown in small clinical trials to have a statistically significant effect in reducing (reversing) plaque build-up on arterial walls. In human trials the reversal of plaque build-up was measured over the course of five weeks. Once-a-week intravenous administration of recombinant apo A-1 Milano (ETC-216) for five weeks led to a significant and measurable shrinkage of human coronary artery plaques as measured by intravascular ultrasound technique. These findings are unprecedented in that reversal of plaque size has been shown in five short weeks. At this time, there are on-going studies for Apo A1-Milano. the only difference i feel is the depression mentally from knowing I have it. I have had three heart attacks and three stents. ask your doctor if you can take cymbalta, it will alleviate some of your stress.

well for staters there is the constant daily diet of tablets i'm on rapramil, tildium, asprin, and a whole lot of others that gets you down because most of these drugs slow the metabolic rate and if your overweight like i am i does not help its a catch 22 i'm ok in the morning but about early afternoon i'm tired/ fatigued i lie down but cant sleep as my mind is still active if i try to do too much i will get the pains usually in my neck and the tingles in the finger tips so then its time to spray the GTN sit down try and relax and start all over again tyhey wont put me on the list for a by-pass as they say the medication is controlling the condition when i do finally die i want on my grave stone too late i told you i was i'll.

First, no one should take potassium without the supervision of a doctor. Too much potassium can cause renal and cardiac damage which can be fatal. Someone who is diabetic should never, ever take any supplements without the advice and supervision of a doctor.

Pick up a book called "The Ultimate Healing System" by Donald Lepore. You have two electrolytes: potassium and sodium. You need the potassium to balance out the sodium. The doctors will put a person with high blood pressure on a low sodium diet without any regard to what it really does... it sets the person up for a stroke because without sufficient sodium the blood could clot causing a stroke on the left side, Bell's Palsy on the left side, and will often develop food allergies. A lack of sodium will actually set a person up for diabetes (I'm not talking about table salt here!) and will result in high systolic blood pressure. Potassium deficiency will result in edema and a build-up of sodium in the body, Bell's Palsy on the right side of the body, dairy allergies, and high diastolic blood pressure. Both are very important to the proper function of kidneys and lymphatic system to remove waste. Adding the appropriate amount of potassium to the diet will balance that out and bring down the blood pressure. The ideal source is eating and juicing fresh vegetables and fruits, but you can use a potassium supplement to balance out the sodium until your dietary changes can take hold. probably genetics..also us latinos and blacks stress more about life then other races..dont you think.this might be wrong but just a thought..i think its just genetics though

I think it has a tiny bit to do with genetics, but it's mostly that, on average, African Americans and Latinos tend to be more obese than Caucasians (ouch!). I don't mean to be offensive by that, but it's just a fact. And obesity leads to heart disease as well as many other diseases. One answerer said that those two groups stress more, but I don't really think you can generalize that, it's really dependent on the individual, their situation, and their coping methods... But maybe it contributes a tiny bit..? But anyways, I think it's a bit more to the genetics side for African Americans and a bit more to the weight side for Latinos. P.S. "Latinos" is too specific; I would venture to categorize it as "Hispanics", as Mexicans are often in this position. Again, not to be offensive, just trying to factually state something.

No. I have an irregular heart beat, had it checked out by the doctor and he said it was normal for me, probably born with it. It is "functional, normal". Do get it checked out if you have one, just to be sure there isn't something more serious going on,.

it depends on how often you have the irregular heart beat for example this summer I was playing softball and had an irregular heart beat that was 160 beats per min. so I had to get rushed to the emergany room so it kinda depends on how often you have it (in case if you're wondering i didn't end up haveing a heart disease) hope this helped!

I really doubt it, It is called an arrhythmia of the heart. And I have alot, I don't know if it's because of stress or my high cholesterol. But I have a blood pressure machine at home & it shows the little warning sign for abnormal heart beats, I've had them diagnosed at the hospital too. The ER just told me to go to cardiologist, my cardiologist didn't say much about it. So no, I don't think it's a heart disease....might be a sign of some sort of heart disease though. Get it checked out. Good luck!

Diabetes is a blood vessel disease essentially. It affects all the blood vessels in the body. High blood sugar level is related to increase cholesterol and fat in the blood vessels, and these cholesterol and fat will stuck on the blood vessel wall, including the coronary arteries. Diabetes also causes calcium deposition on the blood vessel walls, which render the blood vessels wall to be thickened and inelastic and brittle. In the mean time, these blood vessels would become smaller in size in general. Gradually, the small, thick-walled, brittle, and full of cholesterol plague blood vessels develops. We called it coronary artery disease, or coronary heart disease, etc.. Cigarette smoke has many chemicals in it, in which tar can deposit onto blood vessel wall and cause similar changes in diabetes.

Coronary arteries are the only arteries that supply oxygenated blood to the heart per se. Blood flow to the heart (ischemia) can be caused by several factors. There may be debris floating through the blood, as plaque breaking loose from the wall of the artery. Athersclerosis being the most common cause. Not just the narrowing of the vessel itself.

I presume that by "heart disease" you mean coronary artery disease (blocked arteries in the heart). As a previous poster noted, there are many other types of heart disease which aren't related to blocked arteries or cholesterol. Arteries do get blocked with plaques and there are five major conditions that increase the chances of this happening - high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and family history (some people inherit genes that make it more likely for them get coronary artery disease). Also, being male is a risk factor for developing coronary artery disease but there isn't much anyone can do about this! So, it's possible to develop plaques in the arteries without having high cholesterol - especially if one is a male smoker with high blood pressure and diabetes whose father died of heart attack in his 40's. That being said, cardiologists like to keep the cholesterol level very low in people who've got coronary artery disease - they like to keep it even lower than they do in people without coronary artery disease. Best to ask your family doctor or cardiologist if they recommend cholesterol lowering medications - if your cholesterol is naturally very low, they may just choose to keep an eye on it rather than subjecting you to another medication.

That's something that really should be taken up with a physician.

There are certain limitations. Walking is the best exercise. The heart condition decides the speed and the time. There should not be strain to the body and mind. Any cold and hot exposures should be avoided. The doctor should be consulted before they undertake any exercise. Since any strain to the heart whether body or mind will harm the heart and there will be serious problems.

Someone being aware that they have heart disease means that at some point they have been under a doctor’s care and that relationship should be continued. I speak from experience in that just over 15 years ago I had a heart attack and flat lined twice. Today I’m still taking certain types of medication and . . . . . . doing exercise. I walk, use an exercise bike during inclement weather, lift weights and do Tai Chi Chuan and I work. I also watch my weight and eat a balanced diet. It helps diet in that I am also a type 2 diabetic who has to eat a good diet. Of course this is under the doctor’s care. Having a heart condition doesn’t necessarily mean that you become a coach potato, you simply become more aware of life style. However you live life to the fullest extent possible.

Precautions include: check your heart rate regularly during exercise, keep a check on your blood pressure also (there are wrist monitors available that can be worn during exercise), don't get short of breath or excessively fatigued. They need to take these precautions because if they have heart disease, the heart doesn't work as efficiently as it should and they could go into an arrythmia or have a heart attack due to increased demands made on the heart for strenuous exercise

Any age! I'm 20 and have had three heart attacks, and chances are I will probably not live to 30. My heart has a damaged aorta caused by overdoses of strong Ritalin-style medicine when young (Thanks Dr Ravimohammad...)

High Fat and cholesterol intake will contribute to the disease. Aspirin regimen will help thin the blood to keep platelets from sticking and causing a clot. I had 3 cardiologist tell me I am TOO young for a heart attack much less 3 blockages. I am 47,now, 46 then. Non smoker. I am not over weight. All my numbers, except my triglycerides were normal when they informed me I was in the middle of a heart attack and the sooner they stop it the less damage to the muscles itself. [normal triglycerides are a range from 50-150. Mine was 152] Three stents later and I am here to tell you nothing will stop heart disease if its in the genes. My dad had a heart attack at 42~4 by passes then. 13 yrs later angina and 5 by passes. My mom passed away to a massive heart attack at 65 with a clean bill of health from the Dr's. office the day before.

Nope. They are encouraging it!! Why would the Fed's want you to live to an old age? To them, those who make it to retirement actually burden the system. They qualify for Medicare (which they use heavily) and they quit working, which means they aren't paying taxes. So they are no longer assets, they are expenses. The gov. would love it if people worked and paid their taxes and then died right before they made it to retirement age. It's a pretty bleak outlook: But heart disease actually helps them achieve this goal. Precisely why there is no law on how much you can pollute your heart with fat and cholesterol.

The United States is not doing anything to stop heart disease. If you mean the government, that is NOT going to happen. Our government is promoting things that cause heart disease and agencies that are part of the government like the FDA is a ridiculous organization that is designed to promote anything that will fuel the money that is given to politicians. The money is not in curing anything, so don't expect a CURE to heart disease or any other disease soon. It's simply not in their best interest to do so. It took over 15 years of talking to Congress to get them even interested in getting rid of trans fats out of fast food restaurants. And now, they've replaced the trans fat containing oils to oils that form trans fats after you eat them! This cholesterol MYTH that is being promoted by the drug companies is a huge money make for them and what's worse is they know it's a myth, but are making billions on the misinformation. We know how to prevent heart disease and it's NOT GETTING RID OF SATURATED FATS! ! ! From past experience and see the people being elected that have no clue what they are doing is further proof that the "United States" is NOT going to do anything about heart disease. You must become educated to the truth and take your health into your own hands. Don't expect the "Government" to look out for you or be your buddy to make you healthy. The way to stop heart disease is to recognize dehydration as the cause of almost every health problem that isn't inherited or injury-related, and not just a complication of diseases. The three most important substances in the body that sustain life are, in order, oxygen, water and salt. The tissues are made up of 75% water and salt, the brain 85% and the blood 94%. Doctors don't recognize dehydration unless they can treat for it in the ER at a cost of $385 for a saline solution consisting of 3 tsp of salt mixed with a liter of water. Doctors used to advise "drink 8 - 10 eight-ounce glasses of water each day" - now they just say "drink plenty of fluids". The difference is, "fluids" includes soft drinks, coffee, alcohol, energy drinks and everything else under the sun. These "alternatives" may contain water, but they act like a diuretic in that they can pull out as much as 50% more water than they provide - contributing to dehydration. Doctors also warn people of the dangers of salt, saying that it causes high blood pressure. Nothing could be farther from the truth. With high blood pressure, the blood thickens and the arteries constrict when the body has to borrow water from the blood to inject into the cells because the person didn't drink enough water to transport important nutrients to the cells. The heart has to exert more pressure to push the thickened blood through the narrower arteries, resulting in the higher blood pressure. Also, when the blood thickens, the salt that was mixed with the water gets concentrated. Doctors see this concentration of salt and call it "excess". The high blood pressure has nothing to do with the salt. The rise in blood pressure is solely because more pressure had to be exerted to pump the thickened blood. Both the higher blood pressure and the concentration of salt are the result of not having enough water in the blood - which, in turn, is caused by not drinking enough water. Without water and salt, we would all die. Maintaining low levels of water and salt results in health problems. We have doctors telling us that water isn't important ("drink plenty of fluids") and telling people to cut back on salt because it is bad for us - these are the same doctors standing right behind us to "help" us when our health fails. Drug companies produce medications for the purpose of "spoon-feeding" relief to blood pressure patients. Medications for blood pressure do nothing but artificially maintain an acceptable level of blood pressure within predetermined limits. This why they need to be adjusted every so often and why most people are on them for the rest of their life. Water and salt (plus exercise and a few supplements) will lower blood pressure naturally. Doctors don't agree with this treatment because there's no profit in prescribing water.

It should not be up to the government to stop heart disease. It should be up to the individual to look in the mirror to say, "Perhaps I should take better care of myself, and not eat at McDonald's every other day. Perhaps I should take a walk instead of watching American Idol." I'm all for research into heart disease, especially those that aren't caused by our own behavior. I'm not into throwing dollars around because Americans won't quit smoking, won't quit eating fried chicken and won't get off the couch.

It is still a free country (in some regards anyway) last I looked. This means you are free to smoke, drink sugar laden soda, eat a McDonald's and Burger King diet of fried foods and sugar and fat laden milk shakes then park your butt on the couch and vegetate until you are grossly overweight. The government can help educate and discourage poor diet, smoking and a sedate lifestyle but you cannot dictate what a person can eat or force them to exercise. At least many public areas are, by law, off limits to smokers. Some day things may change but only because of the overwhelming cost of health care. Not by government decree but only by hitting individuals in the pocketbook. When you sign up for life or health insurance one of the first questions asked is; "Do you smoke". If the answer is yes, then the premiums are much higher. Can you imagine what is going through the mind of a health or life insurance salesman sitting across from middle aged, obviously obese customer? Insurance companies keep huge and accurate statistical tables on life expectancy and charge premiums accordingly. Only when the cost of doing nothing becomes too high will laws be passed. Smokers and the obese are a heavy financial burden on our health care "system". Those are two very preventable conditions

Polyunsaturated fatty acids are fine *in whole food sources* but when they are separated from a whole food, it exposes the fragile oils to air & causes them to quickly oxidize (go rancid). I do NOT recommend polyunsaturated vegetable oils, oxidized oil creates free radical damage in the body. There is a need to balance your Omega 6 fatty acids with Omega 3. Saturated fats may not be considered as yet an essential fat required for life but human breast milk has 50% of calories from fat & 54% of it is saturated fat (39*% oleic acid - Omega 9 monounsaturated fatty acid & ONLY 3% polyunsaturated fats) for infants (the fats in coconut oil & olive oil - surely nature can't be too wrong). Coconut oil (the only oil close to duplicating breast milk and added to baby formula) has an extremely unique make up with it's medium chained fatty acids and can be processed directly as energy in the liver in much the same manner as a carbohydrate. We all feel comfortable recommending olive oil (with it's unusual oleic omega 9 makeup - the same as in breast milk) but canola oil has the same monounsaturated type oil and there are serious concerns about using this genetically modified oil as a food source. (cattle won't eat it and I trust their instincts better than marketers) We all feel comfortable recommending fish oil but there is dispute with the same omega 3 make up in flax seed oils. The link between saturated fats and heart health was based on faulty science but very few are willing to contradict the long standing myth. Both cholesterol and saturated fat are essential for growth in babies and children, especially the development of the brain. Still, the American Heart Association recommends a low-cholesterol, lowfat diet for children & adults. 50% of dietary fats need to be from saturated fats for calcium to be effective in the bone structure. Saturated fats are necessary for immune system & brain functions, for proper hormone production & are important for good health
