What observations do doctors make on a paitient with coronary heart disease

What observations do doctors make on a paitient with coronary heart disease?
I would like if anyone can give what observations they would actually make

Very careful ones.
2 :
Many patients experience no symptoms. As for visual observations, truncal obesity--a big belly--is often a big sign of heart disease as are high cholesterol levels. They may be out of breath and sweaty with minor exertion.
3 :
I have this. I've had four heart attacks, I died on the table once. I had a six bypass operation and also have three stints in from another surgery. I have never got the usual heart attacks or pain others got. I get super tired, can't make the basement steps. Can't eat, sweat a lot and the heart rate soars, I've had a 244/224 already. They try to keep it at 90/65 but ? and my cholesterol is a 360 nothing changes it, it's a hereditary thing, my sisters are high also. My days are limited, I know that but ? that's life.
4 :
Coronary artery disease involves impairment of blood flow through the coronary arteries, most commonly by atheromas. Clinical presentations include silent ischemia, angina pectoris, acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina, MI), and sudden cardiac death. Diagnosis is by symptoms, ECG, stress testing, and sometimes coronary angiography. Prevention consists of modifying reversible risk factors (eg, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, physical inactivity, obesity, and smoking). Treatment includes drugs and procedures to reduce ischemia and restore or improve coronary blood flow

I am 58 years old and started having these skipped beats around the time I had my first child at age 29, and have had them ever since. I do suffer from AF, but my cardiologist says that the premature beats have nothing to do with my AF and are actually common and not necessarily cause for alarm. He doesn't treat them with medication unless they get bad enough that they interfere with every day life. If you have gone to the doctor and they found nothing wrong, all you can do is deal with it. The doctor might prescribe some type of medication to keep them under control the the side effects of these medications are numerous and dangerous.
2 :
It's considered an arrythmia
3 :
Could be a disorder or disease. Usually there are many meds that help regulate heart beats. Seems like the wiring isnt quite right. Many meds can help. Talk to a cardiologst that will splain everthing to you. YOu will get much better answers than on Yahoo! . Some are totally without consequence and some can develop into more severe rhythm disorders..

how come doctors didn't figure out how to cure heart disease

how come doctors didn't figure out how to cure heart disease?
how come doctors in hospitals didn't find a cure for diseases like heart disease and lung disease?
Cancer - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Doctors are not medical researchers so they would not be the ones investigating "cures" in the first place. Doctors diagnose and treat illnesses based on research performed by scientists. Diseases are very complicated. Even developing a drug that may just treat an illness can take up to 20 years of testing and most drugs tested never make it to market. Many diseases are caused by multiple problems and sometimes the system is poorly understood so more work needs to be done to understand what causes the disease before we can even begin to treat it.
2 :
We've known for a long time what causes heart disease, but the electric and utility industries lobbied our government to suppress the research so that they wouldn't lose their huge profits. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1200/is_5_155/ai_54031955 And now we have cell phone masts and wi-fi to contend with, and no surprise, heart disease is on the rise again. Even kids are dying from heart attacks and strokes today. I wouldn't doubt that this accounts for the increase in lung disease, too - I know wireless has been linked to the increase in asthma.
3 :
It is still a work in progress. There are many things that can cause heart failiure or lung diseases. Research continues daily. Doctors at present can only treat the problem with the medicines or technology that presently exist.

How can education (school, media etc.) help to prevent heart disease

How can education (school, media etc.) help to prevent heart disease?`?
And do you think it's successful?
Heart Diseases - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Educating people on exercise, smoking cessation, and low cholesterol/saturated fat diets can help prevent heart disease only if people are willing to change.
2 :
If someone told you that if you did something that it could kill you, you might change your behaviour. Thats the basics of it.
3 :
Education promoting a healthy lifestyle could go a long way in the early years to maintaining health in later years.
4 :
Educating people on things they can change for a longer life, like prevention of heart disease is good. You might know a lot about it, and do well for your self, but there are millions of peoples lives who could be made longer, better, and more joyful. I do think it is successful. There are many things that have been improved because people are taught. Think if you didn't know smoking could cause heart disease, you might keep smoking, and die 20 years earlier then expected. Not only is that bad for you, but think of the people in your life that will miss you, need you, and be effected in their lives by you. Education is just a tool to help others to do, or not do for a better life and world.. God bless

My cat may have heart disease and has megacolon what should I do for him

My cat may have heart disease and has megacolon what should I do for him?
However he is backed up they have to remove that surgically but they cannot put him under because of his heart he is uncomfortable and I am worried because he is not eating and barely drinking and I have to wait till monday for an ultrasound on his heart

5 :
yes
6 :

7 :
Would a Kitty enema work? I hate to say it, but it sounds like kitty may need to be euthanized if he is in incurable pain. Ask the vet for advice. I know it is sad, but whatever you do, just keep his best interests in mind and you will make the right decision. Much love
8 :
call the taxidermy
9 :
If he is in pain then i'm sorry i'd have to let him go, and i'm sure you really care for him and would'nt like to see him suffer any longer, but don't do what other people tell you! you'll have to be sure in your own mind. good luck and take care.
10 :
I'm sorry to hear about your cat. I hope the heart condition is not too serious. Megacolon can be a chronic problem. Laxatone can help cats pass feces when they are blocked. You may also have to learn the technique for manually manipulating the poop out of the cat's large intestine by squeezing his body. It takes practice but it can be done.
11 :
There are medical approaches other than surgery for the megacolon condition. They involve laxatives, psylium and cisapride. Over time, the cat develops a resistance to the medication, and the dosage has to be increased, which can lead to side effects. The older your cat is, the more viable the medication option. Good luck, as the heart disease certainly complicates matters.
12 :
do what the vet suggests ..people are too attached to a pet to be logical about severe health problems..mine had congestive heart failure..i managed to give him one more year..but he was getting very unhappy and i had trouble getting him to eat..i had decided to take him to the vet and have him put to sleep. he was so miserable..but he saved me the trouble..when i came home from the store he had died..apparently of a heart attack. if the quality of a pets life is no longer good you owe them the mercy of a quiet and painless passing. If you have a good vet he will not suggest an expensive operation, that may not prolong the life of your cat or improve his life. especially if it is an older cat. i lost one under the knife because no one realized his heart was not a normal size.
13 :
DMD Girl! I would call your vet, and not wait till Monday if he is not eating or barely drinking. The more dehydrated your cat becomes, the weaker he gets and surgical risks increase. I suspect that he needs IV fluids. If your vet does not have after hour services, call an Emergency ER. I had a 5 year old Siamese neuter who we treated for Megacolon for 3 years using the gold standard of megacolon treatment, cisapride, lactulose, laxatone and a stool softener that my vet prescribed ( over the counter), so I speak from several years of experience caretaking a kitty with this condition. The medications worked quite well, along with a high fiber diet ( the jury is out on this as there is controversy about high-vs low fiber) for a couple of years but ultimately he had to have a subtotal colectomy. Unfortunately we did not know about his underlying heart condition and he died several weeks after the surgery, although he was recovering beautifully from the surgery. I did join a Yahoo group that is devoted to megacolon. The group was supportive and very helpful with suggestions and information. I recommend that you join this group, as the condition is chronic and can be very emotionally draining for the human caretaker. I am sure that they would be able to give you lots of suggestions as the members are all dealing with the same issue. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline_Megacolon/ Here are some excellent resource links for Megacolon in cats. http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00118.htm http://www.parkvet.net/Feline/FelineMedical/UrinationandBowelMovements/Constipation/tabid/225/Default.aspx http://www.manhattancats.com/Articles/mega_colon.html I do hope this helps and good luck with your cat. Are people born with a heart disease or can they develop over time

Are people born with a heart disease or can they develop over time?
And if they develop over time what usually causes them?
Heart Diseases - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Nobody is born with heart disease. Few people are born with a heart condition or a heart shape abnormality, but that is different from heart disease. Heart disease develops in certain people over time and can be caused by a poor diet, lack of exercise, poor mental health and/or genetics. Essentially, heart disease can be thought of as developing a heart condition over many years, although sometimes there are ways to recover from it. If you have a healthy lifestyle, eat healthy foods and exercise regularly, your chances of getting heart disease are extremely slim.
2 :
Yeah some people are born with heart condition abnormalities and some develop heart disease conditions.
3 :
Some are born with heart disease and some developed over time. if you are born with it it is called congenital heart DISEASE(to the person who says you can not be born with heart disease) others develop it over time, it can be caused by eating habits, weight, lack of exercise and things such as that

Hi! Heart disease is caused by the over-growth of bacteria. And it takes quite awhile to make that happen. Brushing, flossing and the routine you are following will prevent any issue with your heart at this time. It takes a serious infection in the mouth to cause any heart issues. Most peple that this happens to have an on going problem with severe periodontal disease and decayed rotting teeth. Sounds like to me that you are on top of things and I would not worry. Add a warm salty rinse into your routine and I think you will see pinky healthy gums in no time. ~M

Do you think i have heart disease

Do you think i have heart disease?
I am 14 years old.I get this really short sharp pain of my heart sometimes. It felt like my heart is being tightened for a few seconds. It also felt like my heart is having difficulty pumping. Is this normal or should i check for any heart-related problems that i may have?I am really worried,i am not a smoker or drinker but i am an asmathic patient.Could emotions be the cause?I can be very stressful sometimes. This pain only happens 1 to 4 times a day.But sometimes none.
Heart Diseases - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Ok..listen...see a doctor if you are worried. One question to answer right now, is there a history of heart disease in your family, if yes go even quicker. Heart pain can be caused by lack of oxygen i.e. asthma. But yahoo is not the place of this type of diagnosis
2 :
The sharp pains are nothing to worry about, if only happens once in a while. If it happens frequently, I would definitely get it checked out. Emotions can definitely be a cause. If you're really concerned, get an EKG and/or have the doc do a stress test on the treadmill.
3 :
Go ask a doctor you cheapskate
4 :
Being 14 I can pretty much bet the farm that its not heart disease. Stress and emotions can absolutely cause heart attack like symptoms: tightness, feeling of breathlessness, pain etc. If you get these pains while at rest I would say most likely related to stress or possibly even gas. If you get these pains after being active you may have a heart abnormality and may require medication or treatment. In any case it would be good idea to have a doctor look at you, listen to your heart, check your blood pressure, maybe even get an ekg to see how your heart is functioning. All are painless and worth it to give you some peace of mind.
5 :
It is very very unlikely that you have any heart disease at your age. You simply have not lived long enough to have caused plaque to build up to the extent that your vessels would be narrowed and cause pain, even if you were a smoker/drinker. If you are taking a daily asthma medication (broncho dilator) it could be that that is the cause of your angina (chest pain.) Your dose is probably too high. Other causes of chest pain could be that it's actually referred pain from GI (stomach) problems, esp. if this is related to stress....a good way to tell where the pain is coming from is to take a Tums or Rolaids when you get the pain----if it helps, it was your stomach and not your heart. When you say "your heart is having difficulty pumping" if you mean that it's irregular, a few coughs should make it more efficient; If it's because your circulation is poor a baby aspirin (or half an adult) is good for everyone, bec. it makes your blood thinner, which makes the work of your heart easier. (If you get too much aspirin you will know because you will bruise easily, bleed too long with a scratch, etc.) Hope this helps---
6 :
Sharp pains in the chest generally are not considered indicative of heart disease. Dull aching pain radiating from the center of the chest down the left arm, through the jaw, and sometimes even the back, with corresponding shortness of breath, profuse sweating and a feeling of pressure on the chest are symptoms of a heart attack, as well as nausea. I don't know what you mean when you say your heart if having difficulty pumping. You may be having an arrhythmia which is an irregular heartbeat. Many arrhythmia's are not serious, but some are. Your age says that your symptoms are probably not dangerous. Age is not always a factor in diagnosing heart problems. The fact that you are this concerned is cause enough to see a doctor. An echo-cardiogram can rule out any blockages. Your doctor can also listen to your heart and do an ECG to rule out an arrhythmia. See your doctor so you can stop stressing out over these things and start enjoying being 14. Good luck to you. By the way, no one should start an aspirin regime without talking to their doctor first.
7 :
tercules I just heard you here...check this news! http://www.osoq.com/funstuff/extra/extra04.asp?strName=tercules
8 :
Heart disease can strike at any age. Being an asthmatic means your heart can be placed under additional stress. Being 14 is also a difficult time physically, because in addition to the stress of growing up, your body is undergoing tremendous physical changes. The odds are that the pains you are feeling are not in your heart. But it is worth discussing it with a doctor, who can do a simple stress test and get a reading on how your heart is performing. He can also check out some of the other possibilities for pain in that area. General rule - pain should not be normal, and if you are experiencing regular pain, get it checked out. Better to find out it is something small that can be treated than to hear the words, "Oh dear, if you had only come in earlier, we could have done something."
9 :
it could be non cardiac chest pain, due to tension, muscle spasm or even costochondritis

Actually they've found that a small serving of alcolhol once a day is good for you. Most people have a glass of red wine but a bottle of beer or one shot of the hard stuff has the same health benefits. On a funnier note, http://www.theonion.com/content/node/29002

its wine that is good for the heart. whisky might kill you
9 :
See, in the study, the people drinking Whiskey all died in a car crash or from liver failure before heart disease could set in. I would not recommend drinking Whiskey as a preventive measure for heart disease. Red Wine and Dark Beers are also good for your heart
10 :
A small amount of alcohol a day, not just whiskey, will reduce the possibility of a stroke. Alcohol makes blood vessels dilate and therefore, reduces the possibility of a blood clot causing a stroke.

How does one get heart disease without getting overweight

How does one get heart disease without getting overweight?
From a diet? And what kind?
Heart Diseases - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Heart disease can be genetic or a congenial defect like a tear. It can also be caused by smoking, amphedamines or other bad things in our bodies that don't affect our weight. Some people can eat high fat foods without a weight change. Cholesterol levels can affect the heart and may or may nor have anything to do with your diet. Extreme dieting puts a huge toll on your heart. Anorexia, bolemia, and diet pills can all cause heart disease. Basically anything that makes your heart work too hard, get scar tissue, or become enlarged causes heart disease.
2 :
An unhealthy diet and eating too much salt. some risk factors: * individual response to stress may be a contributing factor. Some scientists have noted a relationship between coronary heart disease risk and stress in a person's life, their health behaviors and socioeconomic status. These factors may affect established risk factors. For example, people under stress may overeat, start smoking or smoke more than they otherwise would. * Drinking too much alcohol can raise blood pressure, cause heart failure and lead to stroke. It can contribute to high triglycerides, cancer and other diseases, and produce irregular heartbeats. It contributes to obesity, alcoholism, suicide and accidents. Tobacco smoke — Smokers' risk of developing coronary heart disease is 2–4 times that of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking is a powerful independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary heart disease; smokers have about twice the risk of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking also acts with other risk factors to greatly increase the risk for coronary heart disease. People who smoke cigars or pipes seem to have a higher risk of death from coronary heart disease (and possibly stroke) but their risk isn't as great as cigarette smokers'. Exposure to other people's smoke increases the risk of heart disease even for nonsmokers. Diabetes mellitus — Diabetes seriously increases your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Even when glucose (blood sugar) levels are under control, diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, but the risks are even greater if blood sugar is not well controlled. About three-quarters of people with diabetes die of some form of heart or blood vessel disease. Fixed risk factors - ones that you cannot alter: * A strong family history. This means if you have a father or brother who developed heart disease or a stroke before they were 55, or in a mother or sister before they were 65. * Being male. * An early menopause in women. * Age. The older you become, the more likely you are to develop atheroma. * Ethnic group. For example, people who live in the UK with ancestry from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka have an increased risk

It reduces the way blood flows throught the body. It is when the inner lining walls of the arteries are filled with "plaque", caused by several years of unhealthy habits, usually developed later in life, generally from not eating healthy and physical inactivity. Major causes is not moving or rarely, sitting all day, getting little or no exercise, and unhealthy diet, which is high in fat, sat. fat, trans fat and cholesterol. If left untreated, it is a medical emergency and is usually fatal, which may eventually lead to a heart attack, or CHF, or cardiac arrest, depending on the type. You can read about all different famous people that died of heart diease on wikipedia in section "deaths from cardiovascular disease" or type in the name of a famous person who died of it. It is really quite horrible.
2 :
it clogs your arteries
3 :
Check this link for info>>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronary_heart_disease
4 :
It depends a bit on the heart disease. OK. the most common form of congestive heart disease is atherosclerosis. The arteries thicken and the walls get coated with fatty cholesterol plaques. The cholesterol might come loose like scale in a boiler pipe and block a smaller artery, That artery might be feeding the brain and a stroke results. It might be feeding the heart. Suddenly there is no blood to part of the heart and then it is a heart attack. I hope this is enough.

If the circulatory system is clogged, the blood cannot go though to it's destination which is to all parts of our body. The heart needs the blood supply and if there's none, angina will happen and get worse. This could cause failure to the heart and by this time, breathing is already affected. If the person has angina already, the person should go the nearest cardiologist for farther treatment. Treatment could be a by-pass surgery or maybe if early detection, no surgery is needed.
6 :
60% of the blood is circulated around the heart to keep the heart working. 40% is circulated to the body. Due to accumulation of cholesterol in the veins, it gets blocked resulting in the heart working overtime to pump the blood. As the blockage increases, the pumping gets increased and overloading the pump. When the pump cannot bear the additional burden any more, the system collapses and it is called heart attack. BY the time you start getting the symptoms, you have already crossed the danger mark. Log into www.google.com go to image section and type coronary artery disease. You will get very interesting information

Does anyone know how restricting iron can prevent cancer and heart disease?
I've heard that most cancers need iron to thrive and that iron is part of causing plaque in the arteries. Whenever I give blood, they say that it is good for you. Anyone know more about the science behind this?

cancer does thrive on iron... however... iron is needed for red blood cell to thrive also. So without iron your red blood cells won't function properly, making breathing and respiration difficult. Iron is needed but not too much

Really random question about heart disease

Really random question about heart disease?
I'm trying to write this story about a teenage boy who has a problem with his heart. What are some heart diseases that could fit this description. I guess it doesn't really have to be a heart disease, any disease, really. It has to be something that he can usually function on a daily basis, but then he has a serious relapse (or whatever the term is) and is hospitalized, in need of a heart(/or another surgery depending on whatever suggestions you guys give me) transplant. I know this question sounds a bit dumb, but I don't really know that much about this kind of issue...thanks

1 :
He could have a viral cardiomyopathy. That is a virus like a cold or flu, but it infects the heart, and suddenly the heart gets very, very weak and a young person could urgently need a transplant. You would have to check details online if you use it in a story though to avoid having wrong details in your book. The other is Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which causes blackout like fainting spells. He would need the electrical system of his heart treated with "ablation" in the hospital. Also called WPW.
2 :
he could have a hole in is heart and if u get it publishd and it becomes famise u should say too mandie hick who is loveing and crap like that lol jkng
3 :
Teenage boy so congenital heart defect would fit. Let's go with mitral valve prolapse. He then get a bacterial infection seeding into the blood stream (sepsis). Next, he develops infective endocarditis (bacteria growing on the valve). It causes scaring and further damage the defective valve. Then he needs surgery to replace the valve with a prosthetic one. Good luck

Can you be a healthy weight but still get heart disease from fat build up

Can you be a healthy weight but still get heart disease from fat build up?
Can you be a normal healthy, even slight underweight weight but still have fat build in the arteries?
Diet & Fitness - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Absolutely. Weight is not the same as health. People of any weight can be very unhealthy. That's why everyone needs to keep to a healthy diet, even if their metabolism means they don't gain weight anyway. Just because it doesn't show on their body doesn't mean it isn't happening. X
2 :
Yes. I know skinny people that have died from heart disease, and i know fat gutys that look like sh*t but we run hill sprints together and their hearts are completely healthy. Its all about what your body can do.
3 :
Generally it's less likely than if you are overweight, but definitely possible, especially if you have a family history of those issues or other risk factors like smoking. Cardiovascular disease is closely related to diet and exercise habits, and so is weight, so they are correlated with each other, but the disease doesn't directly depend on the weight. It's possible to eat crappy food and not exercise and still be skinny, either through genetics or undereating the crappy food or destructive behaviors like eating disorders and drug abuse - but that person will have an increased risk of heart disease relative to someone of the same weight who eats healthy and is moderately active.
4 :
Even if you are a "normal" weight, that does not mean you eat healthy food. Fried food and processed food with trans fat can contribute to heart disease. Also, in theory, a person could actually be underweight but be obese in terms of body fat (over 40%

does heart disease in dogs get progressively worse

does heart disease in dogs get progressively worse?
i ask this because my dog is occasionally lethargic, but other days not. over the past few months my dog has seemed overly tired some days and ok others (she's only 5)...we've had blood tests done and they were fine. I'll talk to the vet, but if this were heart disease, would it get continually worse over months? she's not coughing or having breathing problems thanks for your answers...I feel less worried now :)
Dogs - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It's definately possible. There's no law as to how fast heart disease progresses. Of course it depends on the disease and the nature of it. I'm sure the symptoms can wax and wane with somedays being better than others. I'm sure your vet can give you a far more indepth answer as he knows more of your dogs situation than any of us. :) I hope your dog feels better soon!
2 :
Lethargy can be indicate of hundreds of conditions, heart disease one of them, but not without other symptoms. If she was having generalized heart disease with lethargy or weakness, you'd expect decreased urine output, coughing, increase breathing, murmurs, and increase heart rate among other things. It does get progressively worse, just like in humans. I don't know that there's any reason to think that the lethargy is being caused by heart disease (versus any other of the possible causes). If you're concerned, bring your dog to the vet. Your vet will be sure to find heart disease if it exists.
3 :
Depends on the severity of the problem - goes from Grade 1 to Grade 5 - but your dog hasn't been diagnosed with heart disease, so why worry. If she did have it, there are all sorts of medications now to control it in dogs - it's far from a death sentence. We have taken several dogs into our rescue with heart problems, they are o.k., some just need regular medication - no big deal usually.
4 :
Actually it can get worse if not brought to the vet immediately and cured. But if it is not abnormal, maybe he is just getting old . Did you know that a dogs age is x7? Example if he is 3 years dog age, that is 21 years human age
5 :
There are a few different types of heart disease, so yes talking with the vet is what you should be doing. No one can narrow it down to what is going on. Make sure to ask the vet to do a blood test. What you have described really can be a number of things, could be associated with the heart, could be something to do with the nerves, the immune system...really anything Until you see one, make up a journal of everything that is going on, even write down things that to you may not seem important..you never know they very well could be.
6 :
Yes, it would worsen over time. Lethargy is just one symptom, and on its own doesn't necessarily mean that your dog has a heart problem. Your Vet would want to listen to the heart to see if there is a murmur present, or do x-rays to see if the heart is enlarged. An EKG or ultrasound may also be recommended. At 5yrs, heart disease is relatively rare - unless you have breed such as a Dobie that is prone to heart problems. Advanced heart disease would certainly cause coughing due to fluid backing up into the lungs, as well as exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing (turns blue easily) or fainting. Note: heart disease is not detected by doing routine bloodwork. However, you may want to see if the bloodwork included a thyroid level. Hypothyroid dogs can tire easily and seem lethargic. They also tend to put on weight fairly easy - even if they aren't eating much. At this point, I wouldn't jump to a diagnosis of heart disease. But I would certainly advise getting her in to see the Vet sometime soon to discuss her lethargy.
7 :
Unfortunately, yes. Do you know what is wrong with her heart? My dog, like my last, has a heart murmur and although she does not display and symptoms like coughing or fainting yet, (she is now 6 years old). He said the murmur has gotten worse in the last few months and she really needs an EKG done and a cardiologist to look at it. They have meds to slow the deterioration of the heart, and give a little more time. The earlier you start, the better they work from what I understand. Its hard and sad knowing years in advance what you dog is going to die from. The best of luck to both of you, and talk to your vet

How long do you live if your heart has an ejection factor of 20% from coronary heart disease

How long do you live if your heart has an ejection factor of 20% from coronary heart disease?
It has been this way since last fall. Not me, my father in law! Takes a slew of meds including lexipro, don't know the rest.
Heart Diseases - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It depends on how compliant you are with your activity restrictions, medications, diet, check-ups, and follow up appointments. i have seen worse! also remember the mind is much more powerful over the body than you think...try to stay happy and keep stress to a minimum. Give me a list of the medications you are taking and a little more health history, and i will give you some more specific advice, and maybe some tips to improve your quality and duration of life. * lexapro is an anti depressant
2 :
I don't think anyone on line is in a position to give a prognosis here. People can live with that ejection fraction, but it's a fragile balance of medication, rest, activity, seeing the doctor, reducing stress, keeping weight normal, etc. Lexipro has nothing to do with this cardiac condition. It's for something else. A question like this is for his doctor, who knows his particular health and health history. Encourage him to ask when he sees his doctor, or ask if you can go with him to see the doctor next time he goes, and ask. Good luck.
3 :
This is a difficult question to answer for several reasons. There are many causes for a low ejection fraction, and each has its own outcome. Ejection fraction does not always correlate with symptoms or outcome. It is also dependent on the therapies being used and the response to these therapies. Doctors even have a difficult time predicting the outcome in heart failure patients. Factors that influence outcome include the presence of symptoms, weight, kidney function, age, other medical issues, presence of coronary artery disease (blockages in blood vessels of the heart), etc. He should discuss this with his doctor. Sorry I could not help more. Good luck

why do african americans eat a poor ,high fat diet that leads to a greater rate of heart disease

why do african americans eat a poor ,high fat diet that leads to a greater rate of heart disease?
i have read that african americans ,on average have poor deit conscious lifestyles. as a result they suffer a disproportionate amout of diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Is it just a cultural thing where they were raised in households that had poor dietary choices?
Other - Health - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
its mainly because the poorer poplations, not just african-americans, have more access to processed, fatty foods,
2 :
Sadly enough, a lot of them are unskilled and have low paying jobs. Sometimes they don't have the proper fundation or guidence to show how thing should be done the right manner; when they were younger!
3 :
why just lump African Americans. what about the Native Americans who drink alot of alcohol? the poor white trash who spend each meal at Burger King and Taco Bell? don't forget about the upper middle class Whites who eat alot of red meat and over butter their bread? how 'bout the Mexicans who cook everything in corn oil and eat very few vegetables? the Indians who cook with oils, cheeses, and breads? ............
4 :
Both cultural and poor diet choices. Southern women love to cook and fried food and fatty foods and high starch foods is part of that culture. Eating is a big part of the mechanics of the family. I think that education is the key and parents being accountable for what their children eat. It is not just the african americans that eat so poorly, the majority of americans from all races and both male and female. We have become a lazy society where TV, computer dictates how we live. I see a trend with healthy eating, now if the tv was turned off a few nights a week and was replaced with exercise we may all live to be a 100.
5 :
First of all, most American's have poor diets. But there a few reasons any person could have a poor diet, african or otherwise. Socio-economic status could play a factor, whether it be because of limited income, being on a government program that only allows you to buy certain food, lack of education to know how to have a "proper diet," lack of resources around town where you could actually buy good food...etc etc....but again - this can apply to whites OR blacks. Obviously, culture can also play a part in it. But for some diseases, a higher percentage of blacks get the disease because of stress and poor diets (hypertension, for example). The stress of living in a systematically racist society, plus the stress of everyday life, in combination with crappy diets and limited activity that is common to American life, leads to more of a risk of developing a disease.
6 :
I do believe that it is a cultural thing. African Americans have the great tradition of "Soul Food", which is a diet rich in high fats. Foods such as fried chicken, shredded pork, ribs, any part of the pig for that matter, and they cook it in gallons of oil. Don't get me wrong it tastes good and everything, but its very high in saturated fats. And culturally African Americans make a tradition out of having big Sunday dinners with the family with these food. But since these foods are high in saturated fats, they are at a greater risk for heart disease. Because saturated fats have been directly linked to heart disease.
7 :
They eat it for the same reason i do, it tastes better. Fatty foods are very good tasting. I think they have the same attitude i do, have a good time while you are alive. If i had the choice to have a lot less fun and live longer or more pleasure and have a shorter life, I would choose the latter. It's more of a cultural thing than a race thing by far.
8 :
it's called economics. statistically "african americans" earn less. by extention they have less purchasing power. eating well costs more. not a race thing, although that can certainly be a factor. no, it's an economic minority thing

How many people die each year from heart disease, heart attacks and colon cancer

How many people die each year from heart disease, heart attacks and colon cancer?
Is that attributed to poor diet?
Vegetarian & Vegan - 4 Answers

1 :
A lot. But genetics play a huge role.... I know a vegetarian daily runner who dropped dead at 50 from a heart attack.
2 :
http://www.godsdirectcontact.org/veg/alternativeliving/cost_of_meat/english.htm http://www.naturalnews.com/025957_meat_cancer_disease.html actual numbers here
3 :
Many. Part of it is due to poor diet, but genetics, side effects from medication, and poor lifestyle habits (lack of exercise, not dealing with stress, etc.) are also major contributing factors.
4 :
Lots. At least some of the time it may be diet related

What is the difference between cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease

What is the difference between cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease?

Heart Diseases - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
cardiovascular is pertaining to blood vessels or organs that are heart related or go to or from the heart. Coronary is the name of the arteries that feed the heart muscle. Therefore, a clot in the vessel could be referred to as a coronary thrombosis.
2 :
CVD involves not only the heart, but the arteries, capillaries, veins, and possibly the lymphatic system. CHD involves only the heart muscle itself.
3 :
Cardio-vascular is the heart and the veins and arteries it pumps blood to. Coronary heart disease is a problem with the veins and arteries that distribute blood to the heart itself to keep it working properly

What are some fun, interactive, easy ways to teach high schoolers about heart disease and stroke

What are some fun, interactive, easy ways to teach high schoolers about heart disease and stroke?
I want to do it in a way so that I won't seem boring, preachy, or lame. I want to be able to do it under 10 minutes....and make sure everybody learns and isn't bored! Thanks!

1 :
bring in some actual heart attack victims .
2 :
Stuff handfuls of sugar down their unsuspecting throats and make a game out of seeing who dies first within the next ten minutes. Then that'll make them afraid and they'll never eat sugar again, because they'll all be dead. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnjJc8m4XnLLDlhCTncakU7sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081214111312AAeB4Y1
3 :
Highschoolers are hard to teach, Maybe you could bring in a dummy, or some kind of health doll that you could usually find in hospitals, and teach them from that.
4 :
act it out for them or get somebody else to do it. be funny
5 :
What a loaded question. Sorry but I cannot help but look for some humor here.
6 :
get a pig heart to demonstrate with! our school did it, and everyones eyes were fixed
7 :
I don't believe there are fun ways because it is heart attack and stroke, but give out scripts and do a short skit and have the main characters in the skit do an action like a heart attack or something. They will be learning and they would get a kick out of it. HOPE THIS HELPS
8 :
I'll send my mother over...She is a walking time bomb who has already had 2 heart attacks, smokes, is overweight, doesn't exercise and has high cholesterol.
9 :
I would think that on a high school level, with only ten minutes, you would barely have time to get in the necessary facts. Fun/interactive reminds me of younger grades and topics that aren't as serious. It's just my take on it. Give the kids the facts in true or false form and ask how many think something is true, and how many think it's false. Like "heart disease is something that happens after you are 45." which would be false, but in high school you don't realize that.
10 :
Go to a retirement home in Florida and wait for one of them to have a stroke.
11 :
Time is a factor here.... explaining and describing each (a heart attack and a stroke) will take close to 10 min. If time allows, bring in a Para-Medic that works for an ambulance company or a hospital and have them explain. They would know a lot more and can be creative with some of their equipment. Also, a Red Cross trainer for CPR is a good resource. He/she can actually demonstrate and have the students participate in how to use the equipment as well as do CPR. If that takes too much time and/or work on your part, I would give your local city ambulance office or Red cross office for some participation and assistance. Even the Fire department personnel would be happy to come in and do some presentation for you. There are local hospitals that have public relations department that also conducts classes for students as well as the public. They will be a good resource to invite and do a presentation for you. Most of them have very good presentation materials including DVD and other hands on items like rubber heart models gotten from various drug companies. So it's not "easy" for you but definitely easy and interesting for your students
