Heart disease

Heart disease?
My husband was told that his heart is weak and not working at maxium level??? This was based on a catherization that was done from the right leg. Also, prior to the proceedure-he was under medication (asprin, blood pressure and diuretiics) When checking his pulse now, it is normal and he functions normally-no weakness or nothing.. He was admitted due to breathing problems. Once he released about 5-10 lbs of water he was fine. Is it possible to have a weak heart when the pulse is normal? What are the signs of congestive heart failure? Is it reversable?? What heart % is normal for a 42 year old man ? Thanks Also, could the meds have caused the slow heart rate??

Heart efficiency is measured in a term called ejection fraction. A normal heart works @ 65%. I think the threshhold for transplant criteria is 30%, mine is currently 20-25%, but I am not a transplant candidate because I am an alcoholic(recovering) And I still smoke+ I have chronic pancreatitus. At this level walking four block is serious business. P.S. MY pulse is always constant at 73(paced)

it is possible to have a weak heart but a normal pulse. signs of chf include fatigue, swelling or edema, inability to sleep lying down, shortness of breath and weight gain. it's a chronic disease. its treatable with medication and low sodium diet. from time to time people do have exacerbations or acute episodes where they may require hospitalization like your husband did

Do you know any vegans with any types of cancer or heart disease

Do you know any vegans with any types of cancer or heart disease?
One of the main reasons I became vegan was because of the book "The China Study," and because of my family's terrible history of heart disease. Our livers just make too much cholesterol on their own, etc. etc. I have scrawny 10 year old cousins with astronomical cholesterol etc..... So I just was curious if anyone out there knew pretty strict vegans who were unlucky enough to "still" get cancer and/or heart disease that would cause heart attacks, angina, etc. Thanks!!! Been vegan 95% of the time since Nov 06 and I love it! I'm Punjabi, which helps, because the ability to eat really spicy Punjabi, Indian, Pakistani, and Thai food makes you never ever ever miss all that meat, dairy, etc.! I love it and feel great!

6 :
I woudln't say I have heart disease, but I do have high cholesterol due to family history. I'd hate to imagine what it would be if I weren't vegan

lifestyles are the contributing factor. Taking good care of yourself by eating right and exercise you wont be one of the statistics... Obesity is very dangerous to men and women as well..
2 :
Obesity does not help, but I have known skinny people who have had heart attacks and strokes, and fat people with clean arteries. A bad diet is a contributor, but, in my case, it is also genetics.
3 :
The leading killer of women is Heart diseases. They are not taking the symptoms seriously and do not take prompt remedial action.

Using the structure of the heart as a guide the following could be diseased: Heart Muscle (Cardiomyopathy): This can be damaged by decreased oxygen supply, viral and bacterial infections, or substances being deposited in the heart muscle which should not be there (iron, sarcoid, amyloid). Also for transplanted heart immune system can attack heart leading to rejection. Heart Valves (Valvular Disease): leads to irregular flow of blood pushing fluid into lungs or rest of body. Can cause chest pain, fainting etc. Often heard on heart exam. Seen with echocardiogram. Covering of heart: (Pericardial DIsease) Could be infected, inflamed, full of blood. Blood Vessels in the heart being blocked, breaking, or going into spasm: All can cause decreased blood flow to the heart muscle (heart attack) Strange formation of heart present at birth. (Congenital defects) Heart could be a mirror image of usual heart position, have mismatched valves and chambers etc. Arrythmias: Are often due to structural abnormalities of the heart. Some arrythmias are fatal (ventricular tachycardia), others often require treatment (Atrial fibrillation). I'm sure I've left some out but those are the major areas

What is your question? What do you want help with? Your quality of life?
2 :
I would go and see a cardiologist or another for a second opion. But having trouble breathing or becoming very tired for no reason would be a concern.
3 :
Get a different doctor and soon! A TIA is a small stroke another could be a full stroke and either way they can/do cause brain damage. I have had a valve replaced and if necessary it isn't a bad surgery overall, not to say the hole in your heart wouldn't make it more complicated, although I have a couple friends who have had holes also and no long lasting problems to my knowledge. I'd see a good cardiologist and maybe even a geneticist to see if there are other conditions that could be adding to your health issues. I had low blood pressure until the valve needed to be replaced also

How much junk food would you have to eat daily to be in danger of having a heart attack or deveopling heart disease before the age of 20? Iv'e started getting really worried about what i eat, im a healthy weight but i eat alot of junk food, which is worse, excessive drinking of beer, smoking or a high fat diet? I dont smoke and i only drink occasionally, i also excerise very often.

Don't worry too much. If you are really concerned, go visit the doctor. You can very easily decrease blood pressure by taking in good food, even if you get high blood pressure. Don't consume more salts than needed. Decrease fat content in foods and you'll be back to normal in no time. Just in case you want more detailed note on what kind of diets you might have to take... http://www.explainstuff.com/2010/06/16/high-blood-pressure-diets-foods-to-avoid-short-article/ Not trying to scare you, but I saw there was also an article there , which explains how high blood pressure could also cause heart attacks...Read it if you have time... you don't lose anything by spending a couple of minutes... http://www.explainstuff.com/2010/06/06/heart-attack-symptoms-misdiagnosis-and-warning-signs-medical-article/

it depends upon your genetics and age and exercising habits.
3 :
Junk food causes a third of heart attacks - study WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Diets heavy in fried foods, salty snacks and meat account for about 35 percent of heart attacks globally. Their study of 52 countries showed that people who ate a "Western" diet based on meat, eggs and junk food were more likely to have heart attacks, while those who ate more fruits and vegetables had a lower risk. The study supports previous findings that show junk food and animal fats can cause heart disease, and especially heart attacks. Cholesterol called oxycholesterol is virtually unknown to the public and may be the most serious cardiovascular health threat of all. Fried and processed food, particularly fast food, contains high amounts of oxycholesterol
