Root canal treatment is a colloquial term for a dental operation, endodontic therapy, wherein the pulp is cleaned out, the space disinfected and then filled. Every root canal filling tends to leak and bacteria do invade the neighbouring structures - including the heart, lymph nodes, lungs etc. If you have a heart disease, there are chances that the spread of infection to the heart can worsen the condition. So, it is preferable to take a prophylactic dose of antibiotics as advised by the doctor.

Consult the cardiologist before you go to the dentist. Since you are a heart patient, you must be taking blood thinner such as aspirin. This will cause gum bleeding. He will ask you to stop taking aspirin before 3 or 4 days ahead or prescribe some other medicines. Minnesota Dental Association wants dental patients with heart disease to know that most heart patients will no longer need to take antibiotics before receiving dental treatment. New guidelines have been adopted by both the AmericanHeart Association and the American Dental Association which should significantly reduce the number of patients needing to take a course of antibiotics before a dental appointment.
