How safe is general anesthesia for heart disease patients


How safe is general anesthesia for heart disease patients?
My dads heart valve is leaking 30 percent. Is anesthesia safe for my dad? Please advise

There is risk any time we give anybody anesthesia. Your dad will need to be evaluated by a cardiologist, who will write a report that will help the anesthesiologist take care of him. He is at higher risk than a healthy 25 year old, of course, but will likely do fine. You don't say whether the surgery is to replace the valve, or is unrelated to his heart. Part of the risk depends on what is being done surgically. There are times when patients need to have the heart valve replaced before they can have the original surgery that they had planned. If you are concerned, have him seen by someone in the anesthesia department well ahead of his surgery. They can explain what will be done, and answer any questions you may have
