In most cases, the causes of congenital heart disease are unknown. Genetic and environmental factors and lifestyle habits can all be involved. The likelihood of having a child with a congenital heart disease increases if the mother or father, another child, or another relative had congenital heart disease or a family history of sudden death. In 2004, researchers identified a chromosome deletion that might explain some of the genetic causes of certain congenital heart diseases. While only a small proportion of congenital heart lesions currently have identifiable gene markers, the number is growing rapidly. The next decade of research into congenital heart disease will see an exciting convergence of the disciplines of developmental biology, genetics and paediatric cardiology, and, we hope, will not only go further towards answering the question “Why did this happen to us?”, but also provide more secure grounds for genetic counselling and intervention.

Hello, congenital heart disease just means it is contracted before birth, and therefore usually presents in babies or children, although sometimes later. There are many types of CHD eg Fallot's tetralogy (tetra = four; four defects in one), Patent Ductus arteriosus (PDA), VSD (ventricular septal defect = one type of "hole in the heart"), etc. etc. Most types of CHD are due to some sort of insult during pregnancy and are not transmitted genetically; ie, the diseases do not pass from parents to children, so the question of recessive, dominant, sex-linked, etc. does not arise. The common causes of IHD are exposure to drugs OR infective agents during pregnancy eg rubella (German measles), cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, and certain drugs (just like thalidomide led to short limbs
